this is a post about beer.

a few weeks ago i went to the rijksmuseum. they have a lot of old dutch still lifes (if you can imagine). these paintings are so beautiful and usually feature decadent flowers and food and glassware, etc. this one had this long glass tube with rings around it. with a little more reading i discovered that it was a device for a very old dutch beer drinking game. you have to drink the beer down to the next ring. if you don’t hit the ring you have to keep going to the next ring until you hit the mark.

sounded fun to me! so i told fred about it and we went and got materials and made the game.

remember this.

well, we filled it…. mostly.

and played!

my thoughts- it was fun. you really have to like beer to play this. and be careful because it turns out to be a lot of beer! it’s not super hard, but it does get harder the more you play (duh). fred is way better at it than i.

missing bear baby.

here is my painting for today!

for some reason it took me longer to decide what to paint that it did to actually paint it. i think i’ve overhauled my mind in this weeks illustration frenzy.

but while i was trying to decide on a subject matter, i threw together this little pattern. with a little nod to alice in wonderland.

long weekend.

it was a long weekend in these parts. and a weekend that i didn’t take too many pictures. but there was a lot of picnic-ing and dog walking and general relaxing. ate some interesting meats like ostrich (amazing!) and lamb. and drank some pear genever and pink wine.

here are a few things i did take pictures of.

we rode the giant ferris wheel in dam square. and while i was absolutely terrified (afraid of heights aparently?) it made for some goooood picture takin’.

it’s baby bird season! i spent to much time squeaking at the tiny duck and feeding them spice cake.

we found the most generic beer in existence.

fred and i took some old man and old lady style tips and now we have sunglass chains and clip on flip ups.

the battleship potemkin was happy.

i made this. more on this later. ( it’s an old dutch thing / game )

and i replanted my succulent babies. note the re-purposed generic beer can. stay classy.

little things.

window garden

my parents gave us a apartment warming gift of little baby succulents. cacti being one of the few plants i don’t kill, i’m very excited. this now brings the window garden to 5 succulents, strawberry seedlings, an avocado seed and mint. but the mint is half dead. all gaurded by the garden keeper moonman.

metal heart

i got a letter from melissa with this little metal heart she made inside of it. i sewed it to the psycho killer angel puppets wing for safe keeping.

a western bar

my parents also brought some bar paraphernalia that i either left in america or can’t get here. most notably multiple bourbons.  having a well stocked bar is a very important thing.we made some mint juleps with the aforementioned dying mint. and of course. old fashioneds!!

go games

fred bought the game ‘go’. which we attempted to figure out how to play on our own since it did not come with directions. i’m sure we’ll get it one day.

haberdashery uniforms

in love with this hat. and striped shirts. here is my spring uniform.

new identities.

i’ve been working on a bit of a re-brand for myself as an illustrator. it’s slow and steady work. but coming along. this weekend i redesigned my info cards, a way to show my portfolio, and the more boring stuff like invoice forms and letterheads. i like the way they are coming around. it looks so much better when everything is cohesive.

here’s the information card.

a few pages from the portfolio.

and the ever fun invoice form.

infuse.

i keep a lot of glass bottles. and glass jars. and glass anything. i fill them up with just about anything. so. all this open window weather put me in the mood for some infusing. a perfect jar filling activity.

first i chopped up a bunch of cucumbers, put them in a tall jar and added water. instant cucumber water.

then i went out and got some vodka to get serious. infusing vodka is the easiest. all you need is cheap vodka. a knife. some jars. and some fruits or herbs.

it’s good to have an assistant.

chop that shit up. put it in a jar. and fill it with vodka.

i made a ginger, a lemon, a cucumber, and a kiwi vodka. though i recommend mixing flavors too. my favorite i have ever made is ginger pomegranate.

leave them infusing for at least 3 days. do more if you want a stronger flavor.

but! trust me on this. unless you want to poison people don’t leave a hot pepper infusing for more than three days. at the most. i once left a scotch bonnet pepper in vodka for 3 days. i thought i was going to die when i tried it. so spicy. too spicy. and i like spicy.

once they are ready strain out the fruit and have some fun.
