my parents came into town this past week, which is the reason for my radio silence. we went over to keukenhof on a sunny day to check out the tulips. basically this place is a giant park/tulip farm where you can wander around and look at thousands and thousands of flowers. then take a wine pit-stop, and then look at more flowers. you have to like flowers in order to do this. it was very beautiful and the air smelled like…. flowers. if you are ever in holland in the spring. i recommend a tulip farm.
i won’t over whelm you with gobs of flower photographs. but here are a few.
now the fields of tulips.
and of course. a herring and pink wine picnic.
(i just love mini bottles of wine. i want to stock my whole refrigerator up with them.)
5 am and no sleep yet.
13 pints of grain alcohol combined with half a table spoon of novocain. the morning news is played in the note of G while the anti-caffeine is served in test tubes.
12 hours in the past the season ended and there was a 90% chance of rain.
23.5 squirrels stopped the assembly line and started the toxic decent into hibernation.
7:15 am and half the population is down.
it all started with bleaching my hair white white blonde and having a lot of fun. then self dying over it to get back to my natural red hair turned it pink. pink!!!! i don’t have a picture of this because it was embarrassing and awful. so before the dye job even really dried i drank a few glasses of wine and gave myself a buzz cut with scissors. and spent a year or so re-buzzing it and looking like a little boy.
now since its been about 8 years since i’ve had long hair, i’m going through the painful process of growing it out. i don’t know if you’ve ever grown out a weird hack-job buzz cut, but every 2 weeks is another awkward stage. and right now i look like a messy 1960s nondescript band member and hair is always in my face and it just won’t cooperate. i’m dreaming of a few months from now when i will have something resembling a bob and be happy again.
(please excuse the vain nature of this post. i’m at my wits end with my hair right now. it’s all i can do not to shave it all off again.)
the voodoo king.
never fall in love with a voodoo king.
the first week charms with gasoline breath and mice skulls in your freezer. rope burn mornings. pins and needles up your spine.
eventually the vacant eyes are overbearing and the swamp follows you home.
broken fiddle strings and red roses cover the floor. the smell of mud creeps though the walls and you wake up with needles in your heart and your fingernails missing.
fred took some great photos at the decemberists concert we went to last week.
the show was great, it was in an old church on a canal and we ran in fast to get a seat in the balcony right above the stage. we drank red wine out of the glass jars in my pockets and sang along. the decemberists are super good live. super good.
